It can be used to change the role of the server. It is an interactive command and takes no arguments. .sp.5 Do not use this command to change the role of the server if you are not changing domains. Instead, use Server Manager to promote or demote a server. .sp.5 If there is an error during processing or if you interrupt the command, it restores the server to the state it was in before you issued the command. .sp.5 If you are configuring a server as a backup domain controller, you need to supply the name of the primary domain controller, which must be running and connected to the network. You also are prompted for the name of an existing administrative account and password in the new domain. This permits the command to connect to the primary domain controller and to configure the server into the domain. .SH EXAMPLE If a server is a backup domain controller in the domain sales and you want to move it to be a backup domain controller in the domain finance, you can use the joindomain command. .sp.5 You also can use the joindomain command to change the role (primary or backup) of the server if you also are changing domains. .SH WARNING Using the joindomain command re-initializes the accounts database. Using it on a primary domain controller will destroy all of your account information, except for SID-to-UNIX account mappings. SID-to-UNIX mappings are preserved to allow the users to keep their mappings if a server moves to a domain which trusts the server's original domain. If these mappings are not needed, the administrator can remove them by issuing the command "mapuname -p". .SH NOTE If this server runs the Directory Replicator service, use Server Manager to verify that the service is configured correctly.
