About Domains

In AdminSuite, "domain" refers to the extent of the network resources managed with AdminSuite applications. In a "single server domain" management data is available to a single computer only. In a "name service domain" management data is available to all computers in the managed network.

Data Storage

AdminSuite provides wizards and dialog boxes for managing network resources and services. As you add, modify, and delete mailing lists, passwords, user rights, computers, networks, and other elements, data about each is updated in the system configuration data stores and name service tables, to be used for reference by AdminSuite and for future updates.

Single Server Domain Data

On a single Solaris server, management data is stored in files and the data is available only to that single server. So, for example, that server's serial port settings would specify the serial port settings on that server only. Or, if you set user rights for a user who logs on to that server, those rights apply to that user only on the single server, not to any other computer on the network that user might log on to.

Name Service Domain Data

With a name service domain, either Network Information Service (NIS) or Network Information Service Plus (NIS+), network management data is stored in tables and is available to all computers in the domain supported by the NIS or NIS+ server.

The influence of a name service domain extends far beyond the NIS or NIS+ server on which the data tables are located. It extends to all computers in the domain supported by that server. So, for example, when you manage a NIS name service domain with AdminSuite, and create user groups, information about those groups will be available to all computers within the domain served by that server.

Adding Domains to Manage

Before you can manage a domain, you must first add each domain you want to manage to your list of available domains. Note: AdminSuite 3.0 must be installed on each single server domain, and on each NIS or NIS+ master server.

To add or delete a domain, click Domain->Add/Delete Domain.

To begin working in a domain, once you have added it to the list of available domains, click Domain->Switch Domain.
